about

San Diego MC Autopsy is clearly cut from the same cloth as grizzly storytelling artists like Pharaoh Monche, Prodigy, Jadakiss, and Ice Cube. He holds the weight vocally that can crush buildings and spins comic book infused rugged tales likely to make even the “hardest” sounding rapper rethink their approach. There is something throughout his album Savage Planet that reminds me of legendary Chicago group Rubberoom’s Architechnology in its sinister soundscapes and stark depiction of treacherous street scenes. Autopsy takes the incredible production skills of Infinity Gauntlet (Scvtterbrvin) and walks us through the dark corridors of his mind.

From song one you have no choice but to take notice of the weight of the overall sound and presence of both Autopsy vocally, and Infinity Gauntlet sonically as “Savage Planet Introduction” kicks you in the teeth for 4 ½ minutes with shit like “Funerals become by-products of my symphonies, as I transmit blood baths like radio frequencies”, or “I do more than spit bars, I narrate forensics, crime scene the enactments of how your life ended”. Sucker motherfuckers should turn the album off there because it only gets harder going into tracks like “Grey Hulk” (a favourite for me), “Apocalypse Zero” and the Odessa Kane featured “Visions of War”. Autopsy is no joke and he’s further proof that San Diego has been ignored for WAY too long by the West Coast hip-hop community because it produces some incredible artists.

Savage Planet was something I purchased because I was drawn in by Autopsy’s vocal tone and delivery dropped over Infinity Gauntlet’s always on point production, but as I’ve digested the album more it is quickly becoming one of my favourite releases in 2016. It’s hard to put together a cohesive piece of music in general, and even harder to do so with such heavy/dark sonics and topics, but Autopsy & IG have been beyond successful in what they’ve delivered throughout Savage Planet.
